Your Food

People who live by themselves
often lament that it’s no fun to cook for one, and often
it isn’t. So what’s the solution?
Make enough to share. Surprise
your significant other with dinner or lunch for the next day.
Fix a plate for your upstairs neighbor. Bake something tasty
for your coworkers. Food is community, so do your part. Plus,
it’s just fun to feed people; it makes them happy.
There is some
common sense involved. You can’t make turkey chili for
a family of vegans, and as much as the nice lady across the
street might love to devour your coconut buttermilk poundcake,
if she’s diabetic, then it’s a no go. You can always
call first and make the offer; nowadays, more people are paying
closer attention to what they eat, so often they will tell you
up front if they are on restricted diets or are allergic to
certain foods. “Hey Juanita, I just made some roast chicken
and potatoes, can I bring you a plate?” “Gosh, Henry,
that sounds dee-lish, but I’m a pescatarian.” So
you make a mental note, and the next time you make shrimp stir
fry and rice, you give Juanita another shout. No big deal.
Many of us are
on a budget, so we can’t afford to feed the neighborhood
on a regular basis. But once in a while, it’s just a nice
thing to do. And who knows? You may come home some night after
working particularly late and find your neighbor has reciprocated
with her famous spinach lasagna. Karma is a beautiful thing!
