Last year at Tales, Plantation
introduced 600 bottles of Plantation Pineapple Stiggins’
Fancy - the first pineapple artisanal spiced rum ever made by
the inimitable Plantation Master Blender and Maison Ferrand
proprietor Alexandre Gabriel and his spirits partner in crime,
David Wondrich. It was meant to be a one-off, very special experiment.
But it couldn’t be contained. The demand from bartenders,
trade, everyone who tasted it forced Alexandre rethink it all.
Luckily it is now available on a much larger scale with all
the attention required to ensure quality at the highest standards!
I was quite fortunate
to be in the right place at the right time to try this incredible
rum. Many thanks to Amber from H & F Bottle Shop in Atlanta,
GA for the introduction. All I've done is talk it up ever since.
This is a wonderful sipping
rum which I recommend trying neat or with an ice cube or two.
It has subtle pineapple notes and the pineapple tends to sneak
up on you, but rest assured, it is not a pineappley rum. So
run to your local package shop, buy some and get
stiggy with it!!!
A Historical Perspective
In 19th century England, pineapple rum was a sipping spirit
par excellence but like many good things from the past, it fell
out of use. Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Wondrich decided to fix this
and revive this forgotten nectar. It is named after Rev. Stiggins,
a character in Charles Dickens’ immortal Pickwick Papers,
whose favorite drink was pineapple rum.
